CAN THEY REALLY STOP DEVELOPING AI?

As I have mentioned to my readers before, Dario Amodei is the CEO of Anthropic. His sister Daniela is the president of the same AI company. Anthropic is the creator of the series of LLMs — Large Language Models — known as Claude. This, of course, includes the popular AI chatbot, Claude. Dario and Daniela are of Jewish descent.

Anthropic happens to be one of the five top AI labs in the United States of America. Prior to starting Anthropic in 2021, Dario and Daniela both held important positions at another AI lab — OpenAI — which is headed by another Jew by the name of Sam Altman.

As you may know, OpenAI is the creator of the popular chatbot known as ChatGPT. Elon Musk was also one of the co-founders of OpenAI.

Dario and Daniela Amodei eventually left OpenAI in December of 2020, primarily due to AI safety concerns, which were deeply intertwined with a breakdown of trust regarding how commercialization was being handled at OpenAI.

In other words, they felt that OpenAI was rushing ahead for the sake of profit before proper AI safety protocols were put into place.

Interestingly enough, Elon Musk left OpenAI almost three years earlier in February of 2018 for similar reasons, although his decision also concerned issues regarding company control, and the fact that Musk’s EV company — Tesla — had become more involved in the development of Artificial Intelligence, which created a conflict of interest with OpenAI.

The irony of this situation is that OpenAI, Anthropic and Xai are now ALL billion dollar businesses. So despite their squabbles regarding AI safety, at the end of the day, it really comes down to money and profits.

At any rate, Dario Amodie has written a number of lengthy essays regarding the development of AI, the potential benefits AI offers to the world, the potential dangers AI technology poses, etc.

In his most recent essay — which was written after the serious security breaches which occurred at OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta — he warns that AI development needs to slow down — not stop completely — until safety protocols are brought up to speed. Other CEOs — such as Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk of Xai — agree with him.

But can these AI labs really slow down? As I have explained before, for a variety of different strategic and commercial reasons, I honestly don’t think that they really can. Tragically, a lot of other knowledgeable AI-related people share this very same view. In short, the genie has already been let out of the bottle, and nobody can or wants to put it back in again.
