Super Typhoon Champi Barely Missed Guam

SUPER TYPHOON CHAMPI MISSED GUAM BY ONLY 10 MILES!

by Bill Kochman     10-18-2026

Dear online friends, my phone will be dying within minutes, but I wanted to get this message out to you while I still can.

Most of you probably are not even aware of it, but the eye of Super Typhoon Champi, with Maximum Sustained Winds of 150 mph, passed just 10 miles south of the southern tip of our island of Guam in the Mariana Islands almost twelve hours ago around 4:30 AM.

Of course, my power is now out, and as I just said, my phone will be dead soon. It is hard to say how long the power will remain out. Going by previous typhoons, it could be hours, days or weeks. Days is the most likely scenario.

What is interesting is that Super Typhoon Champi is now the third Category 5 storm system to pass very close to us this current year. Champi came closer than both Typhoon Sinlaku and Typhoon Bavi. An El Niño occurring this year in the Pacfic Ocean is not helping, because the phenomenon feeds typhoons due to the warmer than normal ocean water.

The winds are still howling outside my apartment — I am perfectly fine — but Champi is now about 175 miles west of us and slowly moving away.

BUT, again, because of the overall intensity of Super Typhoon Champi, even though I don’t live in the southern portion of our island, nevertheless, I am still sitting here without power.

Let’s see how long it takes GPA to restore power this time around, even though we did not receive a direct strike.

With Bavi, it took them about five days to restore power to most of the island, which was actually record time for them.

With Sinlaku before that, I was without power for 28 days, even though like Bavi and Champi, we did not receive a direct strike.

The longest I have ever gone without power was with either Pongsona or Paka. I can’t even remember now. As a result of that Super Typhoon, it took 32 days to restore my power, and 5 months to replace the broken windows in my bedroom due to a glass shortage.

But, thank the Lord that I am sitting here just fine with my two cats, Polo and Eljio.
